You Gotta Have Hart: Ovechkin Wins the NHL's 2012-13 Most Valuable Player Award

June 15, 2013
Alex Ovechkin DLNo one in the National Hockey League was more valuable to his team than Alex Ovechkin was to the Washington Capitals in 2012-13. Those of us in Washington, of course, knew that from watching him night in and night out. On this day however, the rest of the league has given a full-throated endorsement of his accomplishments we had the privilege of witnessing.

Congratulations to Alex on winning this year's Hart Memorial Trophy, as the player judged most valuable to his team. The honor is all the more impressive when you take into account his switch from left wing to right early in the season. Under head coach Adam Oates, Ovechkin enjoyed an offensive resurgence, culminating in his being named the NHL's MVP by the league tonight in Chicago.

Here is an audio look back at some of Alex's biggest moments, including his hat trick February 23 to down New Jersey at Verizon Center, his empty-netter to defeat Winnipeg April 23 to clinch the Southeast Division, and many more. Thanks to Ben Raby for his audio assist in assembling what you hear here, and to Wes Johnson for his "number one star" introduction at the beginning of the clip. Hope you enjoy reliving some of Alex's biggest moments in 2012-13 as much as we did. Congratulations on a terrific season, Alex.
