Offseason Chatter for Tuesday, July 16

If there is a quiet time of the year here at Kettler, we're likely slipping into it this week. With 2013 Development Camp in the rear view, and training camp still a few weeks off, this is the time where hockey season always feels the furthest away. Time to rest, recharge, and get ready for the 2013-14 season, which will be here before we know it.

However, it's not total radio silence around here. There's still plenty of content to take in over the next few weeks to get you through. Caps Report comes up this Wednesday at 2:00, and Mike Vogel has a couple of one-on-one videos for you to check out this week with first round pick Andre Burakovsky and Tyler Lewington. You can catch up with those later in the week here on the site. Hopefully that will help bring cool thoughts to you, when the heat index approaches something close to 200 or so here in D.C. as we get closer to the weekend. Yuck.

Development Camp was a nice mid-summer break, talking hockey with fans, players, and those who traveled in for the look at potential Caps of the future. I had a chance to chat with Reading Royals head coach Larry Courville last week, who was in for the week. It was the first time I'd caught up with him since Reading's Kelly Cup championship in May. "Voice of the Royals" Mark Thompson also visited Kettler last week, as well as new Hershey head coach Mike Haviland. It was also good to catch up with Tom Wilson last week, who was one of the real stars of the show this time around. (The picture below came from Tom's visit to my office, where he posed with my son, Jack).  Attending your second camp, on the heels of making your NHL debut in the Stanley Cup playoffs will put a big spotlight on you. Enjoyed chatting with him a great deal. No question he'll be one of the story lines at training camp in September, as he looks to make the team. He'll either be in Washington, or head back to Plymouth in the OHL, since he's not eligible to play this season in Hershey to start. As always, great to see so many fans out for the final scrimmage last Saturday. Our video coverage of the game is still available if you want to see it again, all on the homepage at

With the full NHL schedule coming out soon, we're already working on the preseason broadcast schedule as it pertains to radio. Every game during the preseason will be broadcast online at, and it looks like the Wednesday, September 25 game against Nashville will be on 106.7 The Fan and WFED-AM 1500. Full confirmation of the preseason broadcast schedule will be out later in August as we get closer to camp. First glance of the schedule for the Nationals in September looks like most will be online only, but that will include the Caps Mobile App as well as the team site.

If you follow me on Twitter (@WaltonCaps), you may have noticed baseball creeping into your timeline. I've been the lead reporter for our coverage of the Nats this summer over at the ballpark, which has been fun to put together. Once upon a time, I used to do a lot of baseball coverage when I lived in Cincinnati, so it's been a "Back to the Future" thing for me. I'm planning on being at Nationals Park once or twice a homestand the rest of the summer, so if you're a fan of the boys of summer, I hope you'll check out Monumental Network's coverage. I've had the chance to interview a number of players one-on-one style already this summer, and we'll continue to bring that to you during the second half of the season.

Hope you're staying cool this week.
